John Clancy: You know, they made three or four trips into Mexico. They used to drive and of course their car was loaded down with canvases and personal belongings and so on. As a matter of fact, in all his excursions into Mexico he never painted any oils; he did some watercolors. Well anyway, on one the trips—I've forgotten where he was going through, perhaps El Paso or whatever the entry point into Mexico was, naturally they were stopped by the Mexican Customs. And Jo Hopper said, "You know, this Mexican Customs man spoke excellent English. He must have been educated in England. He stopped us and he found this book on Edward Hopper published by the American Artists Group and he became so fascinated with the reproductions and so on that he didn't even examine our luggage."
