Bates's sculpture is more generalized. Simultaneously abstract and representational, it fuses elements of Cubism and African art with Hispanic folk traditions and those of the American South. Discarded scraps of wood and metal, retrieved and transformed into art, function like archaeological specimens, reminding us that another story precedes ours.
