Highly educated and well versed in the history of art, Bates has nevertheless found his greatest inspiration in the humble encounters of humankind and nature he experienced most profoundly in his explorations of Arkansas's Grassy Lake wildlife preserve almost fifteen years ago. Since the early nineties, he has concentrated on sculpture more than painting. In his most recent pieces, Bates combines wood, plaster, and machinery parts to enhance our awareness of the fundamental relationship between people and nature.
