Instead of rendering a photographic likeness of his part-Seminole grandmother, Brown pays tribute to her wisdom and longevity. The matriarch's face, brushed with broad strokes of warm browns and yellows, seems to glow from within. Her timeless countenance, accentuated by exaggerated wrinkles, takes on the appearance of a vast southwestern landscape. In her day, Brown's grandmother was regarded as a visionary by her neighbors. The artist has captured this quality in his depiction of her piercing gaze, which seems capable of looking into and reading one's very soul.
