Allen's experiences growing up in Lubbock, Texas, were enhanced by his exposure to its storytelling culture. Rather than relying on cold facts, ordinary folks chose this colorful way of communicating that combines emotion, plot, and role-playing. As a result, all of Allen's work, whether wall constructions, bronze sculpture, or performance, tends to have a narrative element. The poignant stories of Vietnam vets in the "Youth in Asia" series, told in excerpts of text -- letters home, newspaper clippings, or funeral orations -- combined with evocative objects, show Allen's masterful way of combining words and objects.
