Meet the Curator
George Gurney is curator of sculpture at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and organized Edmonia Lewis's Cleopatra. Other exhibitions that he has curated at the Museum include Chaim Gross -- A Celebration, Sculpture and the
Federal Triangle and Revisiting the White City: American Art at
the 1893 World's Fair.
Mr. Gurney's chief interest is in American nineteenth and
twentieth-century figurative sculpture. He was educated at Brown
University, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of
Delaware, where he received a Ph.D. in art history. He has
taught at the University of Pennsylvania, University of Hartford
and Sweet Briar College.
