Old Arrow Maker (Alternate) -- 2
(not in exhibition)
This version, however, has less delineation in the texture of the clothing and the hair of both figures as well as in coat of the roebuck at their feet.
Inscriptions on different versions of this sculpture vary, however. The inscription here is simply "EDMONIA LEWIS ROMA 1872", but on the museum's other marble, it reads "OLD ARROW MAKER EDMONIA LEWIS." A recently discovered version sold at Sotheby's in March, 1994, is inscribed and dated twice: "Ms. Edmonia Lewis Roma 1866", and "EDMONIA LEWIS ROMA.1866", but on a separate , apparently original base, "THE WOOING OF HIAWATHA" is carved as the title.
