Young Octavian -- 3
(not in exhibition)
For Edmonia Lewis, the "Young Octavian" may have had other associations that related to her sculpture, The Death of Cleopatra. Octavian (63 B.C. -- 14 A.D.), later known as Augustus or Caesar Augustus was the adopted son of Julius Caesar and subsequently the first and one of the greatest Roman emperors. It was Octavian's defeat of Mark Anthony, in alliance with Cleopatra of Egypt at the Battle of Actium that led to the capture of Egypt and to the suicides of both Anthony and Cleopatra.
