To communicate effectively, posters must grab your attention and deliver a message, often in a matter of seconds. Effectiveness arises from a complex layering of words, symbols, and design. Selection of imagery and text involves generating possibilities, creating metaphors, uncovering assumptions, reasoning by analogy, and conditional reasoning. In addition to choice of image and text, design decisions about composition, typography, color, cropping, and orientation can affect meaning.
