Therman Statom     Arabian Seasons

Arabian Seasons
Smithsonian American Art Museum
Gift of the James Renwick Alliance and museum purchase through the Smithsonian Institution Collections Acquisition Program
1994, constructed plate glass, paint, and plastic, 42 x 36 x 4 1/2 in

<< Tea Bowl and Stand          Monkey and Lizard >>

In this piece, one asks, "Is this glass art or art using glass?" The question is essentially one of artistic intent. Therman Statom cuts, constructs, and paints industrially produced plate glass and adds found objects to create visually compelling assemblages. In looking at Statom's art, one senses that stories are being told that the viewer cannot interpret.
