The writer Celia Thaxter stands in the midst of her luxuriant flower garden on Appledore, one of the Isles of Shoals, off the coast of New Hampshire. Childe Hassam belonged to the circle of artists and writers who gathered at her home, and some of his most successful paintings and watercolors depict her home and garden.
