Frank W. Benson
Still Life
about 1926
45 1/4 x 60 3/8 in.
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Bequest of Henry Ward Ranger through the National Academy of Design

Benson painted Still Life over an earlier version of this composition that at one time was thought to have disappeared and was known only through an old photograph. X-rays reveal that Benson added the vase of flowers, fan, necklace, and cockatoo's perch, making the composition more complex and engaging. The feminine ornaments add a touch of mystery to the arrangement of elegant objects.
