William Hawkins
Ohio State University Stadium
enamel housepaint on paneling
46 1/2 x 48 in.
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of Herbert Waide Hemphill, Jr. and museum purchase made possible by Ralph Cross Johnson

An aerial photograph reproduced in a local history book inspired this exuberant interpretation of the stadium at Ohio State University. Hawkins often used images from books and magazines as source material, but took great liberties with the pictures when he applied paint to wood paneling and other salvaged materials.
