Malcah Zeldis
Miss Liberty Celebration
1987
oil on corrugated cardboard
54 1/2 x 36 1/2 in.
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of Herbert Waide Hemphill, Jr.

Painted to commemorate the 1986 centennial of the Statue of Liberty, Miss Liberty Celebration also marks Zeldis's joy at recovering from cancer that year. Rendered in bright orange, Liberty is surrounded by skyscrapers and brightly colored fireworks as she presides over the festive scene. Dozens of flags and more than one hundred figures celebrate this icon of freedom. Abraham Lincoln and Albert Einstein stand with Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe, as well as friends and family of this New York artist. Zeldis has included herself along with her boyfriend at the lower right.
