William Sergeant Kendall
An Interlude
1907
oil
44 1/8 x 43 1/4 in.
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of William T. Evans

Kendall was among America's best-known painters of children. Although he received commissions from such well-to-do sitters as President Taft and Mrs. Vincent Astor, it was his wife, Margaret, and their three daughters who for many decades were his favorite subjects. An Interlude shows his wife kissing their five-year-old daughter Beatrice as they pause while reading a children's book.
