Albert Herter
Woman with Red Hair
1894
oil
32 x 21 1/2 in.
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of Laura Dreyfus Barney and Natalie Clifford Barney in memory of their mother, Alice Pike Barney

A painter, decorator, and muralist, Herter freely mixed various historic styles in this portrait. A medieval tapestry serves as a background, while the woman's gown features a Renaissance-inspired fabric design. The profile portrait recalls classical and Renaissance poses. Stanford White, the American architect, designed the frame, which was based on seventeenth-century Dutch examples.
