Hugh Bolton Jones
Lighthouse Beach, Annisquam
about 1887
24 1/4 x 40 3/8 in.
Smithsonian American Art Museum

Jones shows us Cape Anne, Massachusetts, with a wide view of the sandy road at Lighthouse Beach. It is easy to imagine the artist working under the sun and the billowy clouds, seizing the sun-washed details of sand, rock, and dune, and the tang of the salt air. Our gaze zigzags past the long poles that guide us to where a lone fisherman makes his way from the beach. Even in an increasingly noisy and industrialized world, Jones finds places of repose and delight.
