Albert Bierstadt
Sunrise in the Sierras
about 1872
13 1/2 x 18 7/8 in.
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of Orrin Wickersham June

In this dramatic portrait of Mt. Whitney, with the first rays of morning sunlight touching its peaks, the artist captures the grandeur of the Sierra Nevadas. Bierstadt was particularly drawn to this mountain range in California because of its striking similarity to the Bavarian Alps of his native Germany.
