“We all drifted into Taos like skilled hands looking for a good steady job,” Blumenschein wrote in later years. “We lived only to paint.” Along with Andrew Dasburg, Oscar Berninghaus, Victor Higgins, Walter Ufer, and other artists, who in the early part of the twentieth century came to be called the Taos School, Blumenschein found a lifelong subject in the landscape and people of the American Southwest. He vividly recalled his first view of the region: “The sky above was clear, clean blue with sharp moving clouds. The color, the reflective character of the landscape, the drama of the vast spaces, the superb beauty and severity of the hills, stirred me deeply.”
