Elmer Bischoff embraced the universal over the specific, saying, "I never did figurative painting where the personages were identified…[I] wanted to create a world and to create people in that world who were more timeless." He also described paint as an "alive, sensual thing in itself," here applied so emphatically that image and art merge.
