Beckford Young
assembled and painted wood
74 3/4 x 28 1/2 x 3 3/4 in.
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of Patricia and Phillip Frost

The son of a builder, Beckford Young had constructed a house before the age of twenty. His familiarity with carpentry is evident in this sculpture, an ordinary door transformed into art by adding architectural moldings, strips of wood, and other found objects.
