Norman Lewis responded to the Civil Rights movement with a series of powerful abstractions. Skittering and blurred lines hint at figures moving in a procession through a dusky mist of layered colors. Beneath this formal elegance run subtle allusions to the peaked hoods and nocturnal fires of the Ku Klux Klan.
