Tait took seriously the government's requirement that she depict a realistic scene of American life when she planned Skating in Central Park, one of the first paintings created for the Public Works of Art Project. Bathed in the soft glow of late afternoon light, her skaters form a lively pattern on the ice that contrasts with the soft violet of the New York skyline beyond.
