Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of Joseph Delaney

Delaney once wrote that “when I am doing nothing else, I shall still be doing my crowd scenes.” In this canvas, which was painted two years after the United States entered World War II, he shows the drama of people hurrying through the cavernous train station and young lovers saying goodbye.
