The artist vividly described his efforts to document African American life in Boston's Madison Park: “A green square of trees, paths, benches surrounded by streets with brick houses, and the vibrancy of humanity who spilled into the street, wandered down the paths of the park, [and] sat on the benches chatting about the business of the day. There was no attempt at any actual portraiture in this painting, but rather an impression of some of the types of people one would find.”
