Dense black smoke fills the sky as freight engines begin their slow journey. Debris litters the ground, and a layer of soot covers the surrounding area. Sensitive to the nuances of his subject, Marsh uses the track bed, smokestacks, and other rail yard structures as defining forms in his composition.
