Edward Hopper
Cape Cod Morning
34 1/8 x 40 1/4 in.
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of the Sara Roby Foundation

Seemingly trapped in a bay window with tall dark shutters, a woman leans urgently forward as she spies something beyond the picture's edge. We cannot see the object of her gaze, and she cannot see us watching her. Hopper's play of inside and outside, seen and unseen, hints at larger issues of isolation and freedom.
