Raphael Soyer
56 x 50 1/8 in.
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of the Sara Roby Foundation

Raphael Soyer once said that “if art is to survive it must describe and express people, their lives and times.” In Annunciation two women stand in a moment of quiet introspection. Soyer offers insight into the nature of their interaction only through the biblical title, which refers to the moment the angel Gabriel tells Mary that she will bear the Messiah.
