Brother and Sister (Mary and Gerald Thayer)
1889
oil
92 x 71.9 cm
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of John Gellatly

This portrait shows Thayer's children one year after their mother was hospitalized for extreme depression. Mary had posed two years before for the first and most famous angel painting. Her brother Gerald (born 1883) became his father's assistant and, like his father, an ornithologist.
