A Sense of Place

Artists' Roundtable
April 20, 2007

On April 20th SAAM brought together four remarkable artists with work in the museum's permanent collection to discuss how they create a sense of place in their work. William Christenberry, Betye Saar, David Beck and David Bates all vividly express aspects of the American experience through their art in a variety of media, be it paint or found objects. In a freewheeling conversation, each of these talented artists tell stories, share insights into their creative process from inspiration to completion, and talk about the inclusion of space and places—mentally and physically, literally and figuratively—in their artwork.

The panel was moderated by Eleanor Jones Harvey, Chief Curator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
