Development Office

The Smithsonian American Art Museum began as the first federal art collection, established in 1829 through gifts from private collectors. Today, the museum preserves and shares its 40,000 artworks to inform others about our visual arts heritage. The museum's rich resources offer powerful ways to increase our understanding of American art, culture, and history. From a deep appreciation of our nation's artistic achievement, we gain insights into ourselves and our country.

The museum is fortunate to receive financial support from the federal government to help defray the costs of basic operational expenses. We must also rely upon the generosity of private individuals, organizations, and corporations to reach people across the country and around the world through exhibitions, programs, and communications technology. We invite you to join us in making American art a part of each person's life. There are a variety of ways that you can support the museum. Please follow the links below to find out more.
