Registrar's Office

The Registrar's Office handles all aspects of collection management. The Smithsonian American Art Museum's collection includes more than 40,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs, crafts, and decorative art objects dating from the colonial era to the present.

Specific responsibilities of this office include:

  • Documenting the permanent collection

  • Storing, inventorying, and cataloguing all objects in the collection

  • Packing and shipping all artwork

  • Arranging incoming and outgoing loans for acquisition and exhibition programs

  • Handling loan requests from other museums

  • Coordinating touring exhibitions

  • Photographing art objects

  • Granting rights and reproduction privileges
