Dey acquired the affectionate nickname "Uncle Jack" from neighborhood children during his thirteen years on the Richmond, Virginia, police force. Shortly after leaving the force he began painting real life stories and imaginary adventures. He often pictured people he disliked being gored by pitchforks or spears. The hovering black crows lend a menacing aura to the idyllic landscape in which the deed is performed.
