Elegant and stately, this house was the first private residence designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, an architect of the U.S. Capitol building in Washington. “Sedgley Park”—the house and its well-ordered gardens—quickly achieved landmark status and became a destination for visitors, who, like the group pictured here, could walk leisurely around the grounds.
