When J. Alden Weir saw his first impressionist exhibition in Paris in 1877, he was repulsed, stating, “I never in my life saw more horrible things.…It was worse than the Chamber of Horrors.” Later, however, he became a convert to the style and enjoyed a successful career as a landscape painter. His large farm in Branchville, Connecticut, inspired many of his scenes.
