Arizona's Linda Nez once saw a traveling carnival from a car window. "The colors really stuck in my mind," she said, "so I bought wool and wove my memory." Using traditional Navajo techniques, she set her scene in Monument Valley, Arizona; most of the fairgoers are dressed in traditional Navajo clothing. In creating Carnival, she followed the lead of her aunt, Susie Black, who, she believes, was the first Navajo rug maker to create pictorial designs.
