The paintings in Richard Pousette-Dart's Gothic series reflect his study of medieval manuscripts. The intricacy and continuity of design associated with illuminated Gothic initials and marginalia find a parallel in this painting and in the artist's philosophy. He described the universe in mystical terms as having "no certain points of beginning nor completion no separate inside nor outside."
