"Dabrowsky" was the original surname of the Russian-born artist John Graham, who had changed his name when he came to America in 1921 following the Bolshevik Revolution. The various soft-edged geometric shapes stand for what Kainen called Graham's "austere, magical personality." Kainen associated the calibrated relationship of the forms and their resulting tension with Graham's intensity and high-strung temperament.
