The American Art Museum is delighted when colleagues around the world recognize its initiatives, programs, and publications. Below are recent awards the Museum has received.

2009

  • Webby Awards Official Honoree for Environmental & Experience Marketing in the Interactive Advertising category from the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences for Ghosts of a Chance, an ARG at the Smithsonian American Art Museum

2008

  • Keck Award from the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works for the Lunder Conservation Center
  • Preservation Award from the Victorian Society of America for the careful renovation of the American Art Museum's main building, a National Historic Landmark
  • Potomac Award from the Washington Metro Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers for the careful renovation and creative design of the American Art Museum's historic main building
  • Blue Pencil Awards from the National Association of Government Communicators:
    • First place, Graphic Design for Variations on America: Masterworks from American Art Forum Collections, designed by Karen Siatras
    • First place, Graphic Design Portfolio for Renwick Craft Invitational Portfolio, Theresa Blackinton, Jessica Hawkins, Theresa Slowik (contributors)
    • Award of Excellence, Graphic Design Portfolio for Earl Cunningham's America Portfolio, Theresa Blackinton, Jessica Hawkins, Theresa Slowik (contributors)
    • Second place, Soft/Hardcover Book (50+ pages) for From the Ground Up: Renwick Craft Invitational 2007, designed by Jessica Hawkins
  • Washington Book Publishers Design and Effectiveness Competition, second place award for Studio Furniture of the Renwick Gallery, designed by Karen Siatras
  • National New Deal Preservation Association honored Senior Curator Virginia Mecklenburg for her contributions to scholarship on New Deal art

2007

  • Muse Award for Extended Experience, Gold Medal, from the American Association of Museums for the Luce Foundation Center's interactive computer kiosks

  • Ruth Emery Award from the Victorian Society in America for Temple of Invention: History of a National Landmark by Charles Robertson

2006

  • Frances Smyth-Ravenel Prize for Excellence in Publication Design from the American Association of Museums for America's Art, designed by Karen Siatras
  • Muse Award for Two-Way Communication, Silver Medal, from the American Association of Museums for Eye Level, the American Art Museum's blog
  • Museum Publications Design Competition Award, Second Place, from the American Association of Museums for the American Art Museum's calendar of events, designed by Karen Siatras

  • Thomson Gale Award for Excellence in Reference and Adult Library Services from the American Library Association for the American Art Museum's Ask Joan of Art reference service
