The purpose of American posters has always been to grab the individual and the collective consciousness and demand attention and action. Whatever the message—from urgent appeals to patriotism to voices raised in protest, from pleas for environmentalism to seductive suggestions urging us to buy jeans—the poster reflects the explosion of ideas in the twentieth century, both intellectual and visual.

The first comprehensive exhibition of monotypes in America will be presented at the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, April 4 - Aug. 3. "Singular Impressions: The Monotype in America" will feature more than 125 examples of this fascinating printmaking medium, in which a painted image is transferred through pressure to a sheet of paper, producing a unique impression.


The Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, kicks off a year-long celebration of its 25th anniversary on March 14 with "The Renwick at Twenty-Five," a special exhibition of more than 100 outstanding objects in all craft media of clay, glass, wood, fiber and metal.


We are pleased to present ¡del Corazón!, an interactive educational webzine that draws on the museum's rich collection of Latino art.
