Cheryl Williams lives in Eugene, Oregon, and attended the San Francisco Art Institute and City College, San Francisco. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Charles A. Wustum Museum, in Wisconsin and was featured in the Summer, 1991 issue of Ceramics Monthly. She has worked as an independent studio artist for more than a decade. Her work has been shown in Hong Kong at the Art It Is Gallery. Statement I started my affair with clay in 1975. The enjoyment of working with my hands could finally be combined with my interest in images, geometrical shapes and color. The vessels I'm creating are inspired by my teacher - the teacher who resides in me. The gold leaf on these vessels expresses the inner light which dwells in all of us. The effect is that rare balance of beauty that puts me in touch with myself. I use an airbrush because it gives the appearance of softness in contrast to the severity of the edges. I am continuing to experiment with new shapes and textures and find my work in clay both a challenge and a pleasure. Ask the Artist Where do you get the ideas for your work? Mistakes, dreams. Do you work alone on your craft, or with others? Alone. Do you ever teach, or take on apprentices? Yes. What's the most exciting part of creating your works? Feeling it. What's the most difficult part of creating your works? Being patient! Do you have any advice for somebody just starting out? Don't let anyone talk you out of what you love to do. Can you share a "secret of the trade" with us--something nobody else knows or that you found out only after years of experience? Put another way--what do you wish somebody had told you when you were just starting out that might have saved you hours of wasted effort? There are no secrets in my work.
