Black Carved Jar
1991 |
| This elaborately worked jar expresses Youngblood's distinctive style within the pottery tradition of the Santa Clara pueblo in New Mexico, where he lives. The concise and deeply incised pattern portrays clouds, water, and mountains. Youngblood's objective is to integrate curvilinear design and geometric abstraction so that they flow effortlessly over the form of his vessels. The surface treatment of this unglazed jar, featuring a stone-burnished gloss with a contrasting matte finish in the channels, is characteristic of the pueblo's pottery. |
