Benedetto de Francisci

  • Anthony de Francisci, Benedetto de Francisci, ca. 1915-1920, cast bronze, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of Mrs. Anthony de Francisci, 1966.51.94

Luce Center Label

Anthony de Francisci’s father, Benedetto, worked in the marble business in Palermo, Sicily, where young Anthony assisted him with carving. This experience inspired Anthony to make a career for himself as a sculptor in the United States. Here, the coat of arms in the upper right corner features a mallet and chisel that symbolize the craft passed down from father to son.
