Frances Felten, Letter Opener, ca. 1975, lead free pewter; hand fabricated from sheet, polished, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Museum purchase, 1975.150
In Letter Opener, Frances Felten created an object that is functional, salable, and artistic. The pewter metal is in the shape of a letter opener with a sleek, modern design. Felten "twisted" the pewter in the center, which allows the user to grip the tool and at the same time lends a playful quality to the piece.
Luce Object Quote"Being a craftsman is a happy combination of the urge to play and the need to make a living." Frances Felten
