Man with a Hat, Cane and Glove

  • Nathan Oliveira, Man with a Hat, Cane and Glove, 1961, oil, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Bequest of Edith S. and Arthur J. Levin, 2005.5.56

Exhibition Label
The figure in Man with a Hat, Cane and Glove stands frontally, the formality of his posture and clothing humanized by his crooked tie, a charming imperfection in his otherwise dapper appearance. In describing his process of completing a painting, Oliveira said, “When I reach that point where the painting comes alive, then I step away. It reaches out and starts touching people; it’s up to them to deal with it.”
