John Satterfield, Necklace, 1969, forged and cast sterling silver with turquoise and gemstones, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift from the Collection of John and Dorothy Satterfield, 2001.30.2
John Satterfield forged and cast silver to create this elegant choker and pendant. The strip of silver that goes around the wearer’s neck forms a continuous line down to the top of the pendant, as if Satterfield drew a large question mark with a single flowing stroke. The smooth metal of the choker contrasts with the intricate design of the pendant, which incorporates tiny gems and slivers of turquoise and evokes a fragile piece of coral. Satterfield traveled extensively in Asia, Central America, and Europe, and many of his unusual designs and vibrant colors were inspired by his experiences working with craftsmen and designers in these diverse locations.
