Paul Wayland Bartlett created these two models for a proposed Fountain of Engineers in Washington, D.C. This commission was never completed, however, so no larger versions of these figures exist. Sculptors like Bartlett often created small sketch models of their ideas, to show to the client before work on the full-size statue began. The fact that these preliminary models were cast in bronze suggests that Bartlett considered them significant examples of his work.
