Artwork Description

The Robert Lansing Hardy Medal was first awarded in 1955 to honor individuals under thirty years of age who demonstrated promise in the field of metallurgy. The smaller rondel on the reverse of Joseph Renier's medal depicts crossed hammers and an oil derrick, symbolizing the research interests of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. The award is administered today by the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society, a subgroup of AIME.
