Seated Girl (with hands under legs)

  • William Zorach, Seated Girl (with hands under legs), 1930, plaster, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of Tessim Zorach and Dahlov Ipcar, 1971.449.8

Luce Center Label

William Zorach greatly enjoyed the company of young people and children. He often observed his own children and strove to re-create their characteristic poses in his work. In Seated Girl the figure’s head rests on her knees in a distinctly childlike pose. With lightly closed eyes and a faint smile, she projects a feeling of contentment, as if she is without a care in the world.
