Tea Set (sugar bowl)

  • John Satterfield, Tea Set (sugar bowl), 1994, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift from the Collection of John and Dorothy Satterfield, 2001.30.1.3

Luce Center Label

John Satterfield made jewelry, vessels, and kinetic toys from a wide variety of metals. Mechanical forms inspired him, and the elements in his designs often resemble wheels, levers, and switches. The geometric pieces in Tea Set rest on tiny balls and resemble miniature robots, about to be set in motion.

Luce Object Quote

“[The] visual qualities of mechanical things are . . . the food that feeds my desire to make things.” John Satterfield, SNAG magazine, 1979
